Questions
How can I trust your rating systems?
We have laid out in detail how we score. We explain our approach, the data we use, the factors we take into account and the weightings we use in our formula, plus the reasons why. Plus we compare our approach to guidelines from WSAVA for choosing pet foods. You can review it all here.
What are your credentials? Is there a vet involved?
Yes, there is a vet involved. And there are expert pet nutritionists involved. And we consulted with food processing scientists and pet food expert formulators. Each brings a different part of the puzzle and contributed to the approach and construction of our algorithms.
Why a comparison site rather than ask my vet?
That’s easy… There are over 15,000 different food formulations in the US market, each with different packaging variants and pricing approaches. So of course it is completely impossible for any one person to evaluate them all for nutritional goodness and value for money. But with the data, a computer can compare it all easily for you.
Why is my food rating so low? How can it be so bad?
We use the full scoring range (0 to 100). So the food that comes bottom of our food scoring algorithm will score at 1. That doesn’t mean it will kill your pet. It just means it ranks at the bottom of our 15,000 foods based on our nutritional algorithm. So if you see a very low score, remember that is a comparison, not absolute measure.
Are you following WSAVA guidelines?
Yes and No. We do incorporate most of their guidelines. But some ask for information that is not publicly available (who formulates your food and what are their credentials). And some skew results to larger food companies (do you employ a full time nutritionist) that does not necessarily impact nutritional quality of the food.
Are you being paid for your recommendations?
NO. We don’t take marketing dollars from food companies to affect the rankings. Our algorithms are 100% independent and simply run on our data. We do offer many of the foods in our marketplace and we use our algorithms to hand pick the best combinations in our marketplace collections to make it easy for our members.
